Reasons to Avoid Bunderson Cabinet Refinishing
There are plenty of reasons to not use us.
1. You Can Do It Yourself
Cabinet refinishing isn’t rocket science. There are bloggers and YouTubers ready to guide you every step of the way. Here’s the DIY playbook:
- Buy some cabinet-grade paint – we recommend Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane for DIYers (not for professionals).
- If you care about a smooth finish, invest in a paint sprayer (HVLP or Airless); or grab a brush and roller, embrace brushstrokes and dimpling, and save yourself both a headache and a few hundred dollars.
- Prep like crazy: clean, sand, mask, prime, putty, sand, paint (repeat).
For most kitchens, a professional should expect to expend about 55 hours of labor. If it’s your first time, you’ll easily push 70 hours or more. And if you try to achieve a smooth, sprayed finish, your first time has a high chance of being a nightmare. Mine was. Opt for a brush and roller instead of a sprayer. Yes, the finish won’t come out as great, but you’ll actually complete the project, and — as a bonus — minimal hair loss.
2. We Are Coatings Dorks, So Beware
I guarantee I’m going to bore you with yakking about paints and such. Just cut me off. However, a couple notes:
- We don’t “paint” your cabinets. It’s a refinish. You can call it whatever you want, but so can we.
- We politely refuse to apply customer-supplied products. Most of those we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy’s cabinets.
- “Eco-friendly” is often code for ineffective. Our products are fine for you and your family, and the environment, for that matter. But they also work. They’re durable, hard, scratch-resistant, and resistant to water. They’re not made out of oat milk.
3. We Find Replacing Your Doors is Best
Our strongest suggestion is to replace your cabinet doors rather than refinish them. Most people want our service because they find they dislike the color of their kitchen cabinets. However, a sneaky part of the issue is actually the style of the doors. In fact, we believe it’s usually more important than color. Down the road a few months or years, you’ll love the new look still. Without new doors, the kitchen is likely to disappoint you fairly soon.
4. You Might Not Get That HELOC You Always Wanted
Our service isn’t necessarily cheap but compared to a typical full kitchen remodel, there can be significant savings. Our aim is a more targeted, precise approach to your kitchen. A replacement here, a retrofit there, and some refinish. Think of it like having a doctor that has a variety of approaches that allow him to avoid costly surgery when possible.
